I picked up a pristine Pentacon 300 mm f4, its near mint condition. It was a blind purchase. The lens is not an M42 fit, but looks like a Praktica B mount.

It lacks sophisticated coatings, so color and contrast can be lackluster, but abberations are well controlled for a lens of it's age. Also, the built-in lens hood helps. Sharpness is okay at best, regardless of aperture or focus distance. I expect it is good on a 6x6 medium format film camera. Problems arise in the handling.

Having acquired 180mm f2.8 (Carl Zeiss Sonnar) and 200mm f4 lenses in m42 (Meyer Optik, Pentacon, Jupiter) and 200mm f3.5 in Minolta MD mounts, I intend to buy one, good yet affordable, 300mm f4 lens in m42 or Pentacon 6 mount for my Sony A77ii.. By the way, the Carl Zeiss Jena Prakticar 300 mm f/4 with Praktica B mount is a very good light.
